Files contain all the data stored on your computer. The data can be programs, text, pictures, music, or other types of data. Different file types have different icons.
To create a text file. Right-click an empty spot on your desktop, or in an open folder window, select "new", "text document". Type the name "my text file". Click somewhere else to save the title.
To add/edit text in a file. Double-click the file to open it, If it's empty, start typing. If it contains text, click where you wnat to add text, then type. See Tutorial "Text Editing" for more information."
Shortcuts point to items stored on your computer. Shortcut icons have an arrow on them.
To create a shortcut to an item. Let's create a shortcut to our new text file called "my text file", right-click it, select "create shortcut", type the name.
To open a shortcut, double-click it. This DOES NOT actually open the shortcut. It opens the file or folder the shortcut points to.
Folders hold collections of things stored on your computer. To create a folder: right-click an empty spot on your desktop, or in an open folder, select "new", "folder", type the name "my
folder".
To open a folder or file. Double-click it. To move an item into or out of a folder, drag it (the folder doesn't have to be open). You can change how folder contents are displayed using the folder's
"view" menu. See Tutorial "Folder Appearance".
In earlier versions of windows, moving a file invalidated all shortcuts to that folder. Currently, windows automatically updates shortcuts to moved files the next time you open the shortcut.
You can change how the contents of a folder are displayed using the "view" menu. If the "view" menu isn't shown, press the "alt" key to show it temporarily. We'll talk about that in tutorial "F0lder Appearance".
Thats the end of this tutorial. Thanks for watching.
