This tutorial shows how to change the way folder contents are displayed in windows.
For other computer tutorials and articles, click the link below this video. If the link is not shown, or does not open the website, pause this tutorial and write down the web address shown on the display, then type it into your browser.
To open a folder and display its contents in a window, double-click it.
A folder window's appearance can be changed using the "view" menu on the menu toolbar at the top of the window. If the menu toolbar is not visible, press the "alt" key to show it temporarily. I recommend you make it permanently visible: click organize, layout, menu bar.
View Menu - Ways to display folder contents
Show Extra large, large, medium and small icons - these display the items in the folder as icons.
list - lists item names, using one or more columns column widths are selected so items aren't cut off.
details - displays one item per line, and shows selected information about each item in additional columns. (I recommend this setting.)
When using the details listing, clicking a column heading will sort the listing using that column. Clicking the same column again will reverse the sort order.
Choose details - Lets you specify which file information to display when viewing detais. Click to hide/show each detail (name is always shown). I usually show the date modified and size. Many of the
details only apply to a few of the file types (such as album artist, album title).
The sort and group options allow you to sort the folder display on specified values for each item (even when that value is not currently displayed)
Organize menu
If you use the view menu to change how the folder information is displayed or sorted, you can apply the changes to all folders of the same type. To do this,
Click "organize", "folder and search options", "view". Click "apply to folders" to apply any changes to the view format, or to the advanced options in this window to all other folders of this
type.
Clicking "organize" lets you change the layout of the window. You can
show/hide the menu toolbar, preview pane, and navigation pane. I recommend you show the menu toolbar and navigation pane. For some types of files, the preview pane will show a small sample of the
selected file's contents.
The navigation pane lets you browse to show different folders in the window, click organize, layout, navigation pane. You can drag the edge of the nav pane to take less width.
Thats the end of this tutorial. Thanks for watching.
